What skincare experts need you to know about ageing and skin hydration

So are you really experiencing premature ageing or is it just dehydration? If it’s the latter then this is an easy fix.

Before MM discusses her solutions, let’s start with the basics – dry skin vs dehydrated skin.

Dry skin is a skin type (meaning you were born with it) whereas dehydration is a skin condition (that is easily instigated by lifestyle elements). Of course there are a couple of
other reasons you may develop dry skin over time, such as: medications, nutrient deficiencies (essential fatty acids) and advancing age, but on the whole, MM wants you to know that you can have dehydrated skin without having dry skin. Shockingly for some, oily
skin can still be dehydrated. This is because dehydrated skin results due to a lack of moisture in the skin (whereas dry skin is a lack of oil).

To make things clear, dehydrated skin can have some or all of these signs: taut skin, scaly looking skin, superficial lines, shiny appearance, minor blemishes or breakouts, appearance of premature ageing. Does any of this sound familiar?

Changes in skin hydration as we age

As we get older our skin goes through a number of changes (the obvious loss of collagen and elastin) but there are also changes in the hydration levels within the skin, most notably:

  • Oil production declines with age, producing a dryer complexion in our later years
  • Moisture content will also decrease (Hyaluronic acid will decline in the epidermis and also the dermis resulting in tissue moisture loss)

If you haven’t heard of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) before, this is an essential component within our skin (that our body produces and can also be replenished topically in skincare). HA has the amazing ability to bind moisture, in fact, it can hold up to 1000 times its own weight in water.

Why will dehydrated skin look like visible ageing?

Dehydrated skin is lacking moisture. To help us visualise this concept, let’s think of a sultana compared to a grape. A sultana is a dried grape; its moisture has been removed giving way to the small wrinkled morsel that’s unrecognisable from its former hydrated self. Your skin is much the same, when moisture is lacking, the skin will not exert the same plump hydrated appearance, and instead you will notice fine lines, dullness and an uneven appearance. The key to a plump complexion with minimal fine lines is simple: moisture.

How to protect your skin from moisture loss each day (especially in winter)

  • Avoid excessively hot showers and especially do not allow the shower to run directly over your face
  • Rely on fresh air for ventilation instead of artificial heating and cooling where possible
  • If you live in a very dry climate try using a humidifier to add moisture back into the air
  • Increase foods in your diet that are rich in essential fatty acids (fish, nuts, seeds, avocado)
  • Avoid high consumption of caffeine
  • Limit processed foods in your diet that would be high in sodium
  • Drink plenty of water (for internal hydration)

Skincare secrets for a youthful hydrated complexion

MM knows that the easiest way to achieve transformative results with your skincare regime at home is to incorporate 5 key steps:
1. Cleanse
2. Exfoliate
3. Correct
4. Hydrate
5. Protect

Depending on the condition of your skin, you can adjust the intensity level at each step to create a truly customised regime just for you.

Some of MMs favourites for improving hydration and targeting the appearance of fine lines include Skinstitut’s L-Lactic Cleanser & Hydrating Mask.

L-Lactic Cleanser lets you tackle the winter elements head on and is useful for addressing fine lines and overall dullness. When used either once or twice daily, this medium intensity cleanser infuses moisture and hydration into the skin at the same time as gently exfoliating dead skin cells. With powerful nutrients from seaweed, raspberry and goji berry extracts your skin will feel smoother, softer, more hydrated and less reactive.

MMs secret weapon for hydration is of course Skinstitut’s Hydrating Mask (the name says it all). Only a few uses per week will deliver intense hydration replenishing both dry and dehydrated skin conditions, plumping up and smoothing out the appearance of fine lines. This miracle mask uses intense hydration ingredients, such as trehalose (which has a higher water binding capacity compared to hyaluronic acid), shea butter and a multi-vitamin complex these nourish and repair the damage caused by dehydration. You’re at no risk of becoming a dried sultana when you have your Hydrating Mask on hand.

Remember, both internal body hydration and surface skin hydration is vital for having a smooth, youthful glow.
